Bremen ports see record growth amid major infrastructure investments

Bremen and Bremerhaven ports are experiencing significant growth, with container transport volumes rising 5.7 percent in the first half of the year. To support this, a 1.5 billion euro investment has been agreed upon between German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and the Bremen Senate to modernize port infrastructure for NATO requirements, a project intended to benefit the civilian sector as well.

In Bremerhaven, operators are launching a major modernization effort, investing 1 billion euros to expand capacity to four million TEU through automation and new crane installations. However, logistics experts warn that the primary challenge lies in the inland rail connections. Since 53 percent of cargo from Bremen moves by rail, the unpredictability and reliability of these tracks pose a significant threat to Central European industry.
