Germany students protest against potential compulsory military service

Tens of thousands of students across approximately 100 German cities participated in a nationwide school strike against potential compulsory military service. Organized by the 'School Strike Against Compulsory Military Service' initiative, the protests were triggered by the recent issuance of medical examination summons to young men, including those who had previously indicated no interest in joining the Bundeswehr.

While military service in Germany remains voluntary under a law that entered into force in January 2026, the legislation allows the Bundestag to reintroduce mandatory service if recruitment targets are not met or if the security situation worsens. The government aims to expand the Bundeswehr to over 260,000 active personnel and 200,000 reservists by 2035, citing increased security concerns in Europe.

Protesters expressed strong opposition to the military expansion, with many carrying signs stating, “We will not fight in your wars” and “Education instead of bombs.” Some demonstrators also targeted political leadership, specifically Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Despite the voluntary nature of the current system, the Ministry of Defense has confirmed that all men born after December 31, 2007, are required to undergo medical assessments to determine their readiness.
