Bremen prison corruption investigation targets 23 suspects

Authorities in Bremen have launched a major investigation into a corruption and bribery scandal at the Bremen-Oslebshausen correctional facility. Following months of preparation, investigators conducted extensive searches of eleven prison cells as well as ten apartments across Bremen and Lower Saxony.

The investigation targets 23 suspects, including six prison employees, ten inmates, one employee of a third-party provider, and six external contacts. Prosecutors allege the suspects were involved in smuggling prohibited items into the facility, such as mobile phones, high-quality food, cosmetics, and narcotics. Inmates are suspected of distributing or selling these items within the prison.

Justice Senator Claudia Schilling stated that corruption is “unacceptable and undermines the foundations of justice.” In response, the correctional facility has initiated disciplinary measures against the implicated staff, including suspensions and entry bans. To prevent future incidents, officials plan to implement stricter controls, utilize new drug scanners, and evaluate an ongoing organizational investigation.
