Bremen Senate approves €293 million bailout for GeNo hospital group
The Bremen Senate has approved a €293 million restructuring loan for the municipal hospital group Gesundheit Nord (GeNo) to prevent imminent insolvency. The funding, intended to secure liquidity over the next five years, comes as the group faces significant financial instability due to rising costs and declining revenues.
To stabilize the organization, a radical restructuring plan is being implemented. This includes the reduction of approximately 500 full-time positions and the consolidation of services. Specifically, somatic departments at Klinikum Bremen-Ost are expected to be relocated, potentially reverting that facility to a primarily psychiatric clinic. Additionally, Klinikum Links der Weser is slated for relocation to Bremen-Mitte.
While the Senate aims to maintain municipal ownership and ensure local healthcare provision, the move has faced criticism. Some observers argue that the bailout merely delays an inevitable collapse and question the accountability of leadership regarding the group's financial mismanagement.
