Bremen SPD rejects CDU proposal to abolish higher education civil clause

In Bremen, the SPD parliamentary group has rejected CDU proposals to abolish the ‘civil clause’ in the state's higher education law. SPD spokesperson Janina Strelow argued that the CDU's stance misrepresents the actual needs of universities and the local economy.

Strelow emphasized that Bremen's economy and defense industry are growing, supported by significant federal investments in infrastructure. She noted that universities are currently prioritizing different issues, such as the renovation of campus buildings, affordable student housing, BAföG reform, and internationalization, rather than the removal of the civil clause.
