Bremen to pilot school street closures for increased safety

Following the autumn holidays, three schools in Bremen will participate in a one-year pilot project to implement “school streets.” The initiative aims to increase safety and reduce traffic congestion during drop-off and pick-up times by temporarily closing specific roads to motor vehicle traffic.

The pilot locations include primary schools in Walle, Schwachhausen, and Hemelingen. Under the plan, roads will typically be closed to vehicles 30 minutes before and after the school day begins, marked by “No motor vehicles” signs. To assist parents, “Kiss & Ride” parking areas will be established outside the restricted zones.

Senator for Children and Education, Mark Rackles, stated that the measures are intended to decompress the traffic situation in areas where high vehicle volume can make conditions dangerous for children walking, cycling, or using scooters. The effectiveness of the closures and the use of designated parking areas will be evaluated by the departments for children, education, and internal affairs.
