Bremerhaven port to undergo major military logistics expansion

The German Senate has approved a major infrastructure project to transform the port of Bremerhaven and Bremen Airport into a deployment hub for military logistics. Supported by up to 1.35 billion euros in federal funding from 2026 to 2031, the initiative aims to prepare the region for the transport of heavy equipment and personnel for the Bundeswehr and NATO partners.

The expansion includes constructing new heavy-duty surfaces, bridges, reinforced quays, and deeper harbor basins, alongside improvements to road and rail connections. While the port remains civilian in nature, the upgrades are specifically designed to handle heavy military transports. Approximately 160 million euros of the total budget is allocated to Bremen Airport.

The BSW party has criticized the decision, arguing that state funds should be prioritized for civilian needs such as schools, housing, and climate protection rather than military infrastructure. They expressed concern over the increasing militarization of the Bremen region, noting that the state is covering 33 million euros of the local costs using funds from a special infrastructure and climate protection fund.
