Brenda Fricker's funeral held in Dublin's Liberties
Oscar‑winning Irish actress Brenda Fricker died on 16 July 2026 at age 81 in Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross, Dublin. Her funeral was held on 6 August 2026 at St Catherine’s Church on Meath Street in the Liberties, the neighbourhood where she grew up.
Fricker had asked for a “no tears, no fuss” service focused on laughter and celebration. Monsignor Eoin Thynne told mourners, “no tears, no sadness, no fuss – this is a day of celebration.” Her close friend Liz Duffy thanked local shop owners and recalled Fricker’s wish for a joyful gathering. Attendees included actor Brendan Gleeson, RTÉ director‑general Kevin Bakhurst and costume designer Joan Bergin.
Fricker was best known for her Academy Award‑winning supporting role in *My Left Foot* (1990) and for playing the “Pigeon Lady” in *Home Alone 2*. Her agent Phil Belfield described her as a “legend.” Earlier in the year she received the Freedom of Dublin from Lord Mayor Ray McAdam, underscoring her status as a cultural icon in Ireland.
