Brent Venables signs six-year contract extension with Oklahoma
The University of Oklahoma has agreed to a six-year contract extension with head football coach Brent Venables, keeping him in Norman through the 2031 season. Pending approval from the OU Board of Regents, the deal is expected to average approximately $10.5 million per year, representing a significant increase from his previous salary.
The extension follows a successful 2025 campaign in which the Sooners reached the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2019, finishing with a 10-3 record. Under Venables, the program has seen a defensive resurgence, leading the nation in tackles for loss and sacks per game last season. Athletics Director Roger Denny cited the need for stability and continuity as the program continues its transition into the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
While the extension provides long-term security, some analysts note the mixed results of Venables' tenure, which includes two 6-7 seasons. The program is currently preparing for the 2026 season, which begins on September 4 against UTEP. Additionally, Venables recently addressed an injury to starting center Jake Maikkula, describing it as a ‘short-term’ issue.
