Brentwood bus shelter roof used for homeless encampment
A makeshift homeless encampment was discovered on the roof of a bus shelter in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Located near the intersection of South Barrington Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard, the site features an individual living among personal belongings and a shopping cart directly above a busy transit stop.
Following the discovery, the office of Councilmember Traci Park dispatched a homeless outreach worker to assess the situation. Los Angeles Metro noted that because most bus shelters are owned and maintained by the city rather than the transit agency, jurisdiction for maintenance and management lies with municipal authorities.
The incident highlights the ongoing homelessness crisis in Los Angeles, which serves as a central issue in the upcoming mayoral election between Mayor Karen Bass and Councilmember Nithya Raman. Recent data indicates approximately 45,000 people are experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, with roughly 187,000 across California.
Debate continues regarding the efficacy of the city’s Inside Safe program. While the initiative has received $300 million in funding since 2022, reports indicate that approximately 40 percent of participants have returned to the streets after being placed in housing.
