Brescia tourism sees high occupancy despite heatwave challenges

Tourism in the province of Brescia, Italy, shows strong occupancy levels heading into the Ferragosto period, particularly in lake and mountain areas. According to Federalberghi Brescia, occupancy on the lakes is nearing capacity for the central two weeks of August, while mountain regions report occupancy rates exceeding 70%. The Sebino area, specifically Lake Iseo, shows the highest occupancy rates in the province, and Lake Garda has already surpassed 73%.

However, businesses are facing economic challenges despite high visitor numbers. Confesercenti Lombardia Orientale reports a discrepancy between high occupancy and actual spending, noting that while rates are rising, consumer spending has not seen a corresponding increase.

Extreme heat is significantly impacting commercial activity. High temperatures are driving customers away from historic centers and shops during midday hours, leading to revenue contractions of 20-25% for some businesses. This shift in consumer habits is compounded by increased operational costs for air conditioning and refrigeration. Barbara Quaresmini, president of Confesercenti Lombardia Orientale, noted that climate change is now a variable directly affecting business competitiveness.
