On social media Bielema posted box‑score data from Illinois’s recent postseason wins over South Carolina in the Citrus Bowl and Tennessee in the Music City Bowl, arguing that the Big Ten’s depth across many programs proves its superiority to the SEC’s middle tier.

During the Big Ten media days Bielema also criticized the SEC, suggesting it is “stuck in 2005” and that modern changes such as the transfer portal and name‑image‑likeness deals have reshaped college football. He singled out SEC commissioner Greg Sankey in the commentary, emphasizing that the conference needs to adapt to the evolving landscape.
