Breton beekeeper offers honey for reporting Asian hornet nests
In Santec, Finistère, amateur beekeeper and agronomist Médérick Thebault has launched a community initiative to combat the spread of Asian hornets. He is offering a jar of honey to any resident who reports the location of a hornet nest.
The Asian hornet, which likely arrived in France in 2004, poses a significant threat to bee populations. Beyond direct predation, the presence of hornets near hives causes bees to spend more energy on defense and less on nectar collection. Thebault, who spends up to an hour daily defending his hives using various methods including traps and electric tools, hopes this incentive will help manage the invasive species.
