Breza mine workers begin work stoppage over unpaid wages
Miners at the Breza lignite mine have entered a work stoppage after failing to receive their wages for July. Union President Jasmin Telalović stated that workers have not descended into the mine and are currently awaiting information regarding when payments will be made.
Production at the mine is also facing challenges as workers are currently relocating equipment valued at 30 million KM from a 450-meter deep pit to protect it from high pressure. While management has cited insufficient production as a reason for the lack of funds, Telalović countered that the mine produced coal worth 2.2 million KM last month, which exceeds the 1.8 to 1.9 million KM required for wages.
A meeting is scheduled with Elektroprivreda BiH to attempt to reach an agreement on payment terms. If no resolution is reached, workers have announced a protest in front of the Elektroprivreda BiH headquarters in Sarajevo on Thursday, August 20, from 10:00 to 13:00. Further protests are planned for the following Monday in front of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina government building if the issue remains unresolved.
