Børge Lund appointed head coach of German handball club THW Kiel

Norwegian former player Børge Lund has returned to THW Kiel as the club's head coach, 16 years after ending his playing career there. The 47‑year‑old took charge of the team’s season preparations on Monday, describing the move as a “homecoming.”

Lund noted that while the city of Kiel feels familiar, the club’s modern training and performance centre, opened in 2019, offers players optimal conditions and more flexible training schedules, allowing longer recovery times between sessions. During his playing tenure the club won three consecutive German championships, two domestic cup titles and the Champions League in 2010. Last season Kiel finished sixth in the Bundesliga, missing European competition for the first time in 33 years.

Despite the club’s changed situation, Lund expressed confidence in returning to the top of German handball, while also mentioning practical challenges such as searching for permanent housing and currently staying in a hotel.
