Indonesia to launch Rp11 trillion mass bank account program

The Indonesian government is preparing a mass bank account opening program targeting 200 million citizens to strengthen financial inclusion and streamline the distribution of social assistance (Bansos). Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that approximately Rp11 trillion (roughly $600 million USD) from the state budget (APBN) is being allocated for this initiative. Each new account is expected to receive an initial balance of Rp50,000.

Under the directive of President Prabowo Subianto, the program will utilize state-owned banks, specifically Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) and Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI). BRI is designated to manage account openings across Indonesia, while BSI will focus on the Aceh region. The program aims to automatically provide accounts to citizens upon reaching age 17, integrated with national population data (Dukcapil).

Implementation is expected to begin in stages, with a potential rollout before the end of 2026 or a trial period in the first quarter of 2027. Officials are currently finalizing technical mechanisms and regulations in coordination with Bank Indonesia and the Financial Services Authority (OJK). Lawmakers have emphasized the need for strict data verification to prevent duplicate accounts and ensure the program prioritizes the unbanked population.
