BriaCell advances personalized melanoma vaccine candidate

BriaCell Therapeutics has announced a key genetic engineering milestone for Bria-MEL+, its personalized whole cell melanoma immunotherapy vaccine candidate. This advancement moves the program closer to clinical development.

Bria-MEL+ is a cell-based therapeutic designed to utilize a patient’s own immune system to fight skin cancer. The company aims to offer a personalized yet ‘off-the-shelf’ approach. Instead of manufacturing a unique product for every individual, a saliva test will determine which premanufactured treatment cell line best matches the patient. According to BriaCell CEO William V. Williams, this method is intended to broaden access, reduce costs, and shorten treatment timelines by eliminating individualized manufacturing.

Melanoma remains a significant medical challenge. The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 112,000 new melanoma cases will be diagnosed in the United States in 2026, with an expected 8,510 deaths that same year.
