Brian Banda, Director General of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, dies

Brian Banda, the Director General of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), has died following a short illness. He passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre.

Banda had been appointed to lead the national broadcaster in November 2025. During his tenure, he was recognized for championing modernization and advancing the corporation's public service mandate. Tributes from across Malawi's political and media spectrum have described him as a fearless, professional, and patriotic journalist who possessed a unique ability to conduct probing interviews while maintaining human connection.

Notable figures expressing condolences include former President Dr. Joyce Banda, UTM leader Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, and Menesia Muinjo, Director General of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation. Muinjo noted that Banda's passing is a loss to the wider Southern African broadcasting region. Funeral services were scheduled for Monday.
