Brian Dowling discusses impact of online abuse and doxxing
Irish television presenter Brian Dowling and his husband, Arthur Gourounlian, have spoken out about the severe emotional toll of online harassment and cyberhate. In the upcoming Virgin Media One documentary ‘Toxic Threads’, Dowling describes feeling ‘paranoid’ about leaving his home with his two young daughters following incidents where trolls exposed their private home address.
The couple, who welcomed their children via surrogacy with the help of Dowling’s sister, have been frequent targets of coordinated vitriol. Dowling detailed a two-year struggle to remove family details from the gossip website Tattle Life and recounted facing hostile comments regarding his parental status and biological connection to his children.
Dowling has called for greater accountability on social media, questioning the anonymity of those who target others and suggesting laws that require users to use real identities. He noted that while he initially sought revenge through the documentary, therapy has helped him shift his focus toward the importance of challenging online abuse and protecting family privacy.
