Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu detained in Zambia on treason charges

Zambian police have detained Brian Mundubile, the presidential candidate for the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP), and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, on allegations of treason.

The two opposition leaders were interviewed by law enforcement and given ‘warn and caution’ statements regarding activities linked to national security. Following a period of seeking shelter at United Nations buildings, the duo was surrendered to Zambian police under an agreement between a UN representative and President Hakainde Hichilema, which pledged that the individuals would be subject to the rule of law and due process.

The investigation follows a military raid at Mundubile’s residence in Kabulonga, an incident that resulted in the death of former Cabinet Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya. President Hichilema has accused Mundubile of allegedly forming or harboring a militia with the intent to overthrow the government. The duo is currently being held at the Lusaka Central Police and the Law Enforcement Agencies Command Centre while investigations continue.
