Brian Mundubile to challenge Zambia election results in court

Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile has announced plans to challenge the presidential election results in court, alleging that the Electoral Commission of Zambia announced flawed and misrepresented figures. Mundubile, representing the NRPUP, claims his campaign documented serious irregularities regarding ballot security, transportation, and discrepancies between polling-station records and the final tally.

The Electoral Commission declared incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema the winner with approximately 60 percent of the vote, compared to 38 percent for Mundubile. The election period saw reported tensions, including the arrest of 11 people—some of whom were opposition figures—during a raid involving gunfire. Additionally, vote-counting was temporarily suspended following reports of ballot paper theft and violence against polling staff.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed concern regarding the arrests, stating they must be consistent with international human rights standards and Zambian law. While Mundubile seeks legal recourse, analysts note that his defeat was also driven by significant regional voting disparities, particularly in the Southern, Western, and North-Western provinces where Hichilema maintained a massive lead.
