Bricen Rivers sentenced to life for killing nursing student Lauren Johansen
Bricen Rivers, 25, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty to the capital murder of his former girlfriend, Lauren Johansen. The sentencing took place at the Forrest County Courthouse in Mississippi.
Johansen, a 22-year-old nursing student at the University of Southern Mississippi, was found dead in the trunk of a vehicle at Wolf River Cemetery in Pass Christian on July 3, 2024. Following the discovery of her body, Rivers fled into a nearby wooded area, leading law enforcement on a manhunt before his capture. Investigations indicated that Johansen was killed in Forrest County before her body was transported to Harrison County.
During the proceedings, Johansen’s father, Dr. Lance Johansen, testified to the violent and manipulative nature of the relationship. Court documents revealed that Rivers had previously been jailed in Davidson County, Tennessee, for the kidnapping and beating of Johansen in December 2023. An administrative error allowed Rivers to be released on bond, enabling him to return to Mississippi.
In a statement to the court, Rivers apologized, stating, “Lauren didn’t deserve this.” Judge T. Michael Reed responded by affirming that no person deserves such treatment and confirmed that Rivers would never be released from prison.
