Brick Lane residents protest data center project at Truman Brewery

Residents of Brick Lane, a central hub for London’s Bangladeshi community, are protesting a government-approved plan to build a data center at the site of the former Truman Brewery. The multi-million pound redevelopment project of the 4-hectare site is intended to include offices and commercial spaces alongside the data center.

Opponents, including local councilor Faysal Ahmed and members of the ‘Save Brick Lane’ campaign, argue that the development prioritizes the needs of the nearby City financial district over local community requirements. A primary concern is the lack of affordable housing; out of 44 planned apartments in the redevelopment, only six are designated as social housing. This has sparked criticism given that approximately 31,000 households in the Tower Hamlets district are currently on social housing waiting lists.

The project reflects a growing global tension regarding the proliferation of data centers driven by the rise of artificial intelligence, with local residents expressing concerns over high energy footprints and the impact on urban planning and neighborhood character.
