BRICS nations agree to boost local currency use and economic cooperation
At the BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Mumbai, member nations agreed to enhance economic and financial cooperation to mitigate global economic uncertainty. A primary focus of the agreement is the promotion of local currency transactions and the development of cross-border payment connectivity to bolster economic resilience.
During the summit, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto proposed a concrete plan for BRICS members to collaborate on industrialization and the optimization of shared resources. He emphasized integrating the natural resources of the Global South, such as critical minerals and renewable energy, with the economic strengths of member nations to strengthen the bloc's position in global value chains. China officially expressed support for this proposal, pledging to deepen technological partnerships and industrial alignment among members.
In addition to trade and industrialization, the group discussed digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cyber resilience, and sustainable finance. The members also advocated for the reform of the global financial architecture, specifically calling for changes to the governance of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to better represent developing nations.
