BRICS payment systems process over $10 trillion in transactions
Instant payment systems within the BRICS bloc have seen significant growth, managing over $10 trillion in transactions over the last 18 months. This volume has begun to challenge traditional Western competitors like Visa and Mastercard.
Key drivers of this growth include India’s UPI, which serves over 550 million users, and Brazil’s Pix, which has over 170 million users. These government-supported systems facilitate account-to-account transfers without relying on traditional credit or debit card networks. To expand their reach, these systems are exploring connections with foreign central banks to facilitate faster cross-border transactions and currency conversion.
In Europe, the European Central Bank is working on interconnecting its TIPS instant payment platform with India’s UPI, with a pilot program expected in the first half of next year. Preliminary studies are also underway regarding a potential link with Brazil’s Pix. Additionally, the announcement of BRICS Pay aims to establish a dedicated payment system for member nations to reduce reliance on the US dollar-dominated financial architecture.
