BRICS nations discuss linking CBDCs and fast payment systems

BRICS nations are exploring the integration of their fast payment systems and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) to enhance cross-border transaction efficiency and reduce costs. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated that these discussions are in the early stages but represent a significant effort to build a more multipolar financial infrastructure and reduce dependence on the US dollar-based SWIFT network.

In addition to payment connectivity, the RBI is actively working to internationalize the Indian rupee and promote the use of local currencies in global trade. India is set to host the 2026 BRICS summit, where digital payment interoperability is expected to be a key agenda item.

Regarding technological advancement, Governor Malhotra urged Indian banks to embrace artificial intelligence as a capability to be harnessed rather than solely a risk. He emphasized that banks must maintain human oversight over AI-driven financial decisions, implement board-approved governance policies, and maintain inventories of all AI models in use to ensure accountability and mitigate operational risks.
