BRICS Summit in New Delhi calls for Sudan ceasefire and financial reform
At the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, member nations adopted the ‘New Delhi Declaration 2026’, focusing on multipolarity, global financial reform, and the peaceful resolution of international conflicts.
Regarding regional stability, the group called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Sudan to address the worsening humanitarian crisis and the risk of extremism. Leaders also urged ‘maximum restraint’ amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and West Asia.
On the economic front, BRICS officials advocated for reforming global financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank to increase the influence of emerging economies. To reduce reliance on the US dollar and the SWIFT system, the group is exploring alternative payment methods. Specifically, India and Russia are discussing the use of central bank digital currencies to settle bilateral trade, aiming to facilitate faster cross-border payments and reach a trade target of $100 billion.
