BRICS summit in New Delhi focuses on economic cooperation and financial infrastructure

The upcoming 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi serves as a critical test for the expanded bloc, which now includes eleven members such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The summit aims to transition the group from a collection of nations with shared critiques of the global order into a cohesive economic and political force focused on technology, innovation, and sustainable development.

Beyond political rhetoric, a significant strategic focus is the development of alternative financial architecture. Rather than focusing solely on a hypothetical new currency, member nations are exploring the interoperability of existing national payment systems and central bank digital currencies. By connecting platforms like India’s Unified Payments Interface and Brazil’s Pix, the bloc seeks to create direct cross-border settlement mechanisms that could reduce reliance on dollar-denominated channels and Western-controlled financial infrastructure.

However, achieving unified action remains challenging due to divergent national interests, including economic competition between China and India, geopolitical pressures on Russia, and regional security disagreements among Middle Eastern members.
