BRICS Summit: Iran and UAE leaders agree to move past tensions
At the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, held a high-level meeting aimed at de-escalating regional tensions. The leaders agreed to “turn the page” on past differences and focus on building a shared future, marking a significant diplomatic breakthrough following the suspension of trade and financial ties by the UAE in August 2026.
During the summit, Pezeshkian also engaged with leaders from Russia and China, expressing optimism for expanded economic cooperation. He emphasized that the BRICS bloc provides a mechanism for members to resist unilateral sanctions and reduce dependence on the US dollar. Additionally, Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and expressed readiness for negotiations under international law.
In separate bilateral discussions, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. El-Sisi called for increasing the trade volume between Egypt and India to 12 billion dollars, highlighting sectors such as technology, clean energy, and pharmaceuticals for potential cooperation.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also noted that multinational companies have expressed interest in South African investment opportunities during BRICS-related meetings. He further mentioned ongoing discussions among BRICS central banks regarding local-currency payment systems to facilitate easier trade among member nations.
