Mato Grosso do Sul bridge collapse kills truck driver

A truck driver has been found dead after the João Wenceslau Leite de Barros bridge collapsed on the MS-168 highway in Mato Grosso do Sul. The driver was located submerged and trapped inside the vehicle's cabin by Fire Department divers in the Taquari River, near the border of Coxim and Corumbá.

Investigations reveal that this is the third bridge collapse in the state involving the same construction company. Previous incidents occurred in Guia Lopes da Laguna in 2016 and in Rio Negro in February 2026. The state government is currently investigating the cause of the most recent collapse.

The destruction of the 168-meter-long concrete structure has significantly impacted regional logistics, forcing travelers to take a detour of approximately 100 kilometers to cross the area.
