Bridge maintenance and repairs reported in Shrewsbury and Wales

Maintenance work on the Castle Foregate and Great Western railway bridges in Shrewsbury has been extended until 8 November. Managed by Network Rail and Amco Giffen, the project was delayed after engineers identified a need for additional steelwork repairs before scaffolding could be fully erected. The work includes structural cleaning, repainting, and the installation of new pigeon-proofing mesh.

While bridges remain open to vehicles during the day, there are ongoing road and footpath restrictions. Pedestrian access along Castle Foregate remains closed, and motorists face disruptions around Cross Street and Howard Street. Scheduled overnight and early-morning closures will continue through early November to facilitate mesh installation and scaffolding removal.

In Wales, Cadw has submitted plans to Caerphilly County Borough Council to refurbish a bridge serving the eastern approach to Caerphilly Castle. Conservation reports indicate that the existing timber decking and balustrades are in “very poor condition,” with some timber rot described as having “non-existent” structural integrity. While emergency repairs were conducted in July, officials warn that the access route could face closure within 12 months if replacement work is not completed.
