Bridge over Rio Mundaú Reconstruction Starts in Alagoas

On Friday, the mayor of Branquinha, Neno Freitas, joined vice‑mayor Renato Purificação, senator Renan Filho, the DER director Iran Menezes and state officials to sign the service order that officially launches the reconstruction of the bridge over the Rio Mundaú in Alagoas. The project, long awaited by residents of Água Branca, Batateira, Bom Sucesso and nearby communities, is described by the mayor as “much more than concrete and structure, it represents the return of mobility, safety and tranquility for hundreds of families.”

The bridge work occurs amid renewed scrutiny of large‑scale public works in Brazil’s Northeast. Recent events such as the inauguration of the Major Sales tunnel in Rio Grande do Norte, where President Lula noted water had not yet arrived, and the still‑unbuilt Salvador‑Itaparica bridge, have sparked political criticism over timing and execution of major infrastructure projects.

In parallel, the Natal city council approved Law 8.160, obligating the leveling of road caps, manholes and drainage structures to pavement height during any paving, resurfacing or repair work. The law, aimed at protecting motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, takes effect 30 days after publication and will be enforced in municipal contracts and concessions.
