Bridgeport residents oppose proposed Amtrak rail yard

Residents of the Bridgeport neighborhood in Chicago are expressing strong opposition to a proposed Amtrak rail yard. The project would involve relocating an existing rail yard from the South Loop to Bridgeport, situated near the Chicago White Sox stadium, Rate Field.

Local community members have voiced concerns regarding potential decreases in property values, the loss of long-term residents, and increased industrialization of the area. Over 1,000 people have reportedly signed petitions against the development, citing environmental and community character concerns.

Amtrak has defended the proposal, stating that the modern facility—to be built on a Union Pacific Railroad site—will improve efficiency, reduce service disruptions, and provide economic benefits through job creation. 11th Ward Alderman Nicole Lee has pledged to oppose the proposal, arguing the facility should be placed in an established industrial zone.
