Bright Osayi-Samuel boosts Nigeria recall hopes with EFL standout performance
Birmingham City defender Bright Osayi-Samuel delivered a standout performance in a goalless draw against Sheffield United, recording 16 possession recoveries. According to Opta, this figure was the highest recorded by any player across the English Football League during the opening weekend of the season.
In addition to his defensive work, the 28-year-old won seven of his 12 duels and completed two successful dribbles. This performance may strengthen his position for a return to the Nigeria national team, the Super Eagles, ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Osayi-Samuel has frequently served as a reliable option for Nigeria when established right-back Ola Aina has been sidelined by injury. While Aina has returned to fitness following a hamstring injury, Osayi-Samuel’s recent club form provides head coach Eric Chelle with increased competition for the position.
