Brightlands High Tech Agro facility opens in Venlo to advance autonomous horticulture

The Brightlands High Tech Agro (BHTA) facility has opened in Venlo, Netherlands, to advance the next generation of horticulture through the integration of robotics, artificial intelligence, and data science. Researchers from various disciplines, including biologists and computer scientists, are working to develop autonomous greenhouses. These systems aim to address labor shortages and enhance food security by using robots for harvesting and soil sampling, while AI analyzes sensor data to manage plant health and growth variability.

In a related development in the sector, the organic cultivation company Eten bij Beelen in Houten has recruited Filip van Noort, a crop specialist from Wageningen University & Research (WUR), to professionalize its various cultivation processes. Van Noort will apply his expertise in growth models and plant monitoring to support the company’s organic production of vegetables, herbs, and other crops.
