Brigitte Reimann’s Diaries and Letters Published After Decades of Censorship

The first volume of Brigitte Reimann’s diaries and letters, originally prepared for a 1983 release to mark the author’s 50th birthday, finally appeared at the end of that year after delays caused by East‑German publishing controls. Editors Walter Lewerenz and Elisabeth Elten‑Krause selected and compiled the material, which had been subject to “Druckgenehmigung” procedures that functioned as de‑facto censorship.

Literary scholar Ingeborg Gleichauf’s recent study examines how Reimann’s work intertwines life and writing, describing her as a “prose architect” whose texts reveal a double existence. The analysis covers both well‑known novels such as Franziska Linkerhand and lesser‑known pieces, emphasizing the lasting relevance of Reimann’s voice in German literature.
