Brijuni National Park researchers find two young noble pen shells
Two young noble pen shells (Pinna nobilis), a critically endangered species in the Adriatic Sea, have been discovered during collector inspections in Brijuni National Park. The discovery provides hope for the recovery of the species, which has faced massive die-offs due to pathogens and parasites.
The first specimen, named Dora, was transferred to the Pula Aquarium for specialized care, including controlled water parameters and specific nutrition, to ensure it can grow into a healthy adult. A second juvenile was also located during the ongoing field research.
This research is part of the eighth consecutive year of the project “Conservation of the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis) in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea.” Led by scientist Dr. Silvija Kipson and her diving team, the study involves inspecting collectors placed in July to monitor the recruitment of younger individuals and gather data on reproduction and population recovery potential.
