BRIN develops bioremediation to restore Southeast Sulawesi mining lands
The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing science-based solutions to restore former mining lands in Southeast Sulawesi, where environmental damage is becoming increasingly difficult to control. Through the Mining Land Biodiversity Research Collaboration Center, BRIN is focusing on bioremediation and phytoremediation technologies. These methods use biological organisms and plants to restore ecosystems rather than relying solely on traditional reforestation.
Researchers noted that these plant-based approaches have successfully improved coal mining sites in North Kalimantan and tin mining areas in Bangka Belitung. The goal is to improve soil ecological functions and ensure sustainable vegetation growth so that the land can once again benefit the environment and local communities. Experts emphasized that a research-integrated approach is necessary to address soil and water quality changes, biodiversity loss, and socio-economic impacts caused by massive mining activities.
