BRIN tests cassava flour as potential forest fire suppressant

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is conducting scientific studies into the use of cassava flour as a potential alternative material for suppressing forest and land fires (karhutla). Following a suggestion by Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, BRIN molecular chemists have determined that the concept is theoretically sound.

BRIN and the police are collaborating to move from small-scale tests to large-scale trials. These studies involve analyzing chemical compositions and developing specific tools for application, as the material cannot be applied manually. President Prabowo Subianto has requested that this innovation be further developed and tested.

However, experts caution that this is not standard kitchen flour. Research published in the journal Processes indicates that cassava starch dust can be combustible and poses an explosion risk under certain concentrations and ignition conditions. Consequently, the material must be carefully formulated and applied using specialized equipment to ensure safety and effectiveness.
