Italy: Meloni refuses to sign magistrate salary increase decree

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced her intention to withhold signature from a decree (DPCM) intended to implement salary adjustments and arrears for magistrates. The decision follows rulings from the Council of State that mandate a new calculation method for salary increases covering the periods 2018–2020 and 2021–2023.

Meloni cited economic priorities, stating the estimated cost of nearly one billion euros is disproportionate compared to other sectors, such as the crisis facing the road transport industry. She noted that the requested amount is approximately ten times the resources being sought to support transporters.

The National Association of Magistrates (ANM) has responded by stating that these increases are a legal right rather than a gift, aimed at aligning judicial pay with other public sector categories. The ANM has indicated it is prepared to pursue legal action, including a possible appeal or a request for a court-appointed commissioner, if the government fails to comply with the judicial rulings.
