Brindisi City Council splits over airport infrastructure motion

A single-topic session of the Brindisi City Council regarding the Puglia airport system resulted in a split within the governing majority. During the session, Mayor Marchionna called for a break to hold a meeting with group leaders to attempt to establish a unified position.

The motion, originally proposed by Fratelli d’Italia, underwent significant amendments, including a suggestion by Councilor Cannalire to develop cargo traffic in Brindisi. Following these changes, Councilor Luperti announced that he and his group would withdraw from the session and abstain from voting. Despite this departure, the motion was ultimately approved unanimously.

The motion characterizes the Salento Airport in Brindisi as a vital strategic infrastructure for regional mobility, business competitiveness, and tourism. It emphasizes that the airport functions as an economic ecosystem supporting various sectors, including handling, security, catering, logistics, and local hospitality services.
