Brindisi court hearing for the murder of Carabinieri Marshal Carlo Legrottaglie

During a hearing at the Brindisi Court of Assizes, Camillo Giannattasio, 59, apologized to the widow and family of Carabinieri Marshal Carlo Legrottaglie, who was killed in a shooting in Francavilla Fontana on June 12, 2025.

Giannattasio is charged with complicity in aggravated voluntary homicide, weapons possession, and resisting a public official. He testified that he was present in the vehicle with Michele Mastropietro, the individual identified as the shooter, but claimed he was only there to assist a client with a broken-down car. Giannattasio maintained that he had no direct contact with the military patrol and did not use any weapons, stating, “I am not Mastropietro, I did not hold any weapon that morning and I did not pull any trigger.”

Legrottaglie, a Gold Medal for Civil Valor recipient, was killed during a patrol when Mastropietro opened fire after being intercepted in a stolen vehicle. Mastropietro later died following a separate confrontation with law enforcement.
