Brindisi explores historical heritage and economic development

A conference titled ‘Brindisi: from the Roman Appian Way to the Mediterranean’ will be held on October 28 at the Nuovo Teatro Verdi. Organized by the Municipality of Brindisi and the Fondazione Nuovo Teatro Verdi as part of the ‘Brindisi Puglia Capital of Culture 2026’ initiative, the event aims to examine the city's historical role as a crucial link between Rome and the Eastern Mediterranean via the Appian Way and Via Egnatia.

Discussions will involve historians, institutional representatives, and experts to reflect on how Brindisi's Roman and Mediterranean heritage can be leveraged for modern territorial valorization. Topics include the city's role in a contested Mediterranean landscape and the importance of Mediterranean agriculture as cultural heritage.

Parallel discussions emphasize the need to integrate the local wine and agricultural sectors into the city's economic development strategies. As Brindisi seeks new growth opportunities following the decline of its petrochemical and energy industries, proponents suggest that the DOC Brindisi wine production and local viticulture offer significant potential for tourism and economic identity.
