Brindisi launches biomonitoring project to study environmental pollutants

The Prevention Department of ASL Brindisi has begun recruiting participants for the One Health Citizen Science (OHCS) project. Conducted in collaboration with AReSS Puglia and funded by the National Complementary Plan, the initiative aims to better understand population exposure to environmental pollutants to improve health prevention and protection.

The study, which runs from November 16 through the end of the year, will involve 150 randomly selected residents of Brindisi between the ages of 20 and 50, consisting of 75 men and 75 women. Participants will undergo free blood and urine analyses to measure exposure to metals and other environmental contaminants.

In addition to pollutant testing, the project includes blood chemistry exams—covering glucose, cholesterol, and liver, kidney, and thyroid functions—as well as electrocardiograms. Participants will receive their results and may share them with their family doctors. Selected residents may be contacted by the Prevention Department via telephone to participate voluntarily.
