Brisbane 2032 and Doha 2030 sporting event updates
Queensland Sport Minister Tim Mander has defended the decision to host football preliminaries for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games in Sydney and Melbourne. Mander stated that utilizing these cities for football is a strategy to ensure the Games remain cost-neutral by maximizing ticket sales for the most popular sports. While regional Queensland areas like Townsville and the Sunshine Coast are earmarked for other events, the specific venue plan for football will be finalized once the International Olympic Committee approves the sports program, which is expected by the end of 2026.
Separately, organizers for the Doha 2030 Asian Games have expressed readiness to adjust their schedule if the event is moved to 2031. The Olympic Council of Asia is considering reshaping the sporting calendar so that future Asian Games serve as preparation for the Olympics. Such a shift would place the Doha Games just months before the Brisbane 2032 Olympics. Ahmad Abdulla Al-Buenain, chief executive of the Doha organizing committee, noted that any decision regarding the date would involve coordination between the OCA and the International Olympic Committee.
