Brisbane City Council issues fines for long-standing parking practice

Residents of Abbeville Street in Upper Mount Gravatt are facing backlash after the Brisbane City Council issued multiple parking fines for vehicles parked on a grassy verge. For over a decade, locals have used the strip adjacent to a local park to keep the street clear, with many residents and workers believing the practice was permitted due to the lack of prohibitive signage or road markings.

One resident, Darren Henley, received two fines totaling $344, while several neighbors were each fined $172. Local Labor MP Corrine McMillan has intervened, describing the enforcement as “egregious.” McMillan noted that the fines were issued without prior warning, community engagement, or any apparent change in local circumstances, leading to significant frustration among community members who had long-standing parking habits.
