Brisbane ferry services to halt for day-long union strike

Brisbane ferry services will be suspended all day this Friday due to a day-long strike by the Maritime Union of Australia. The industrial action follows several shorter peak-hour strikes conducted over the past month.

The dispute is between union members and the operator, RiverCity Ferries, which is owned by the Kelsian Group. The union is protesting over pay and working conditions, specifically alleging that the company has refused to match the Fair Work Commission’s 4.75 per cent annual wage review increase or keep pace with inflation.

While most ferry services will remain docked, services to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and Coochiemudlo Island are expected to operate as usual. Regular ferry services are scheduled to resume on Saturday.
