Brisbane officials mandate e-scooter cleanup after river dumping
Authorities and city officials are responding to the widespread dumping of rental e-scooters in the Brisbane River. Police are investigating a specific incident in June where a group allegedly threw 16 scooters into the waterway near the Queens Wharf Road area. While two minors were previously dealt with for similar offenses, investigations into the larger-scale dumping continue.
Unusually low tides in August revealed dozens of submerged devices along the riverbanks, prompting concerns from environmental experts regarding the impact of lithium-ion batteries on the aquatic ecosystem. Chemicals such as lithium, copper, nickel, cobalt, and manganese pose potential risks to local wildlife and water quality.
In response, Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announced that e-scooter providers, including Beam and Neuron, will be required to fund and assist in cleanup efforts. The organization Ocean Crusaders, which has recovered approximately 150 scooters from the river over the last year, has been a primary actor in removing the debris. The providers have indicated a willingness to partner with cleanup groups to ensure inappropriate placements are addressed.
