Brisbane opens new pedestrian boulevard on Albert Street

A new pedestrian boulevard has opened on Albert Street in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD. The central strip had been closed for seven years during the construction of the underground Cross River Rail station.

A 102-metre section between Elizabeth and Charlotte streets has reopened as a shared zone for pedestrians and cyclists. The area features 26 new trees, 12 benches, water bubblers, bike racks, and garden beds containing over 41 subtropical species.

The project is part of a “green spine” vision to create a tree-lined corridor connecting the City Botanic Gardens to Roma Street Parklands. The final walkway of the Cross River Rail project is expected to reach 245 metres in length, featuring over 70 trees and 5,800 plants. While pedestrians have priority, vehicles may still access the Royal Albert Hotel car park via Elizabeth Street under a 10km/h speed limit.
