Brisbane restaurateur ordered to pay $255,000 for sexual harassment
A Brisbane restaurateur, Rojal Basnet, has been ordered to pay $255,000 in damages following a finding of sexual harassment and sex discrimination against his former employee, Sunita Pariyar.
The Queensland Industrial Relations Commission found that Basnet, the former owner of the Nepalese restaurant Mountain Bliss in Stones Corner, engaged in a campaign of harassment driven by an infatuation with Pariyar. The commission's findings included allegations that Basnet cornered and groped Pariyar in a storeroom and threatened her and her husband.
In 2022, Basnet reportedly went to Pariyar's home uninvited at 3 a.m., threatened to kill her husband, and struck her in the face. Industrial Commissioner Daniel Pratt described the conduct as “sickening,” noting that it left Pariyar seriously injured and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The restaurant in Stones Corner has since closed.
